Does Shaving Cause Dark Underarms?

Yes, it does.

But we can do a few things to prevent the darkness that comes from shaving.
This post will discuss more of what we can do.

The reason for dark skin from shaving in the underarms…

The dark skin in the underarm area is basically pigmentation.

Pigmentation is when a portion of the skin is darker than the surrounding.

Pigmentation occurs when there is inflammation.

Inflammation is the first step, and inflammation eventually leads to pigmentation.

What can we do to avoid darkness from shaving in the underarm area…

Don’t use regular soap to lubricate the layer between your razor blade and your skin.
Only use shaving soap, gel or cream.

Make sure the shaving blade is sharp. A dull blade leads to ingrown hair, which leads to inflammation. Inflammation in the underarm area will eventually lead to pigmentation.

Ensure the shaving soap/gel/cream does not have fragrance, nickel or essential oils.
These ingredients will cause inflammation in the underarm area, which will eventually lead to pigmentation.

Don’t leave the shaver in the shower. This will make the blade dull.

Replace the razor blade regularly.

After shaving, use calming skincare ingredients in the underarm area.
Using calming ingredients after shaving or waxing is always a good practice.
Calming ingredients will reduce inflammation.

Don’t follow any quick fixes you see on the internet for underarms.
Most internet quick fixes will further inflame the skin – and inflammation will eventually lead to pigmentation (dark underarms).
